Mead Open Farm

Mead Open Farm has been on my list of places I’ve wanted to visit for ages and when they pinged me a message to ask if I’d like to come and review with my kids, I jumped at the chance.  It’s just south of Leighton Buzzard in Bedfordshire, about 30 mins drive from Milton Keynes or Aylebury and just under an hour from Bicester.

Mead Open Farm Adventure Playground

Mead Open Farm has all the fun of a children’s farm park with a whole lot more going on both indoors and out.  They have a huge playground right at the entrance and there was no way my boys were passing this without having a good explore.  The big climbing frame has multiple routes up and three fantastic slides from straight and speedy to slow and curly to get down.

There’s pleny for little ones too with a wide range of lovely wooden equipment.  It’s all well spaced out so everyone has plenty of room (it’s vast so I didn’t quite manage to capture the full extent).  The ground is bark chips so no need to worry if it’s been raining as it won’t be muddy.

Meet The Animals

Next up we headed to the animal barn with our feed to meet the very welcoming sheep and goats.  There’s lots more opportunities to meet the animals from the Bunny Hop to pony grooming but with so much to pack into the day we didn’t quite get round everything.  Always a good excuse to go back.

Outdoor Family Fun at Mead Open Farm

Mead Open Farm is packed with great activities outdoors.  We spotted the new go karts and made a bee line straight there.  I thought it was a slide to start but they’re go karts and the wheel give just the right amount of speedy to be thrilling.

My kids spent ages here racing each other down and kept returning for more goes throughout the day.

What I loved about Mead Open Farm was the variety of what’s on offer to appeal to a wide range of ages.  Younger kids will love the diggers in the sandpit and the dedicated sand and water play area.

For older kids with a head for heights, there’s a Sky Trail high ropes.  Children have to b 1 metre minimum height (accompanied) and 1.2 metres minimum height (unaccompanied) and don’t forget to bring closed toe shoes for this.  It’s 20ft up in the air with various routes around – don’t worry, they’re clipped on with a rope.

Children under 1.2 metres can test out their balancing skills on the Sky Tykes lower version which runs underneath. The Sky Trail and Sky Tykes High Ropes is open weekends from April to October and during school holidays.

There’s more too with a mini golf course, rock climbing wall, tractor & trailer rides (April to October), go karts, bouncy pillow and electric cars.  Shaggy’s On Road Adventure is charged seperately but everything else is included with admission.

Mead Open Farm Indoor Play

If the weather takes a turn and you’re looking for some fun indoors, Mead Open Farm more than delivers.  We visited on a scorching day so it was a welcome relief to head inside where it was gently airconditioned.

We loved the big climbing area with twisty slide and lots of space to run around.  On through towards the back of the barn is a huge area.  The central wow feature are all the brilliant slides.  Don’t forget long sleeves and trousers for the drop slides.  If that’s a little daunting then there’s a great wavy slide to race your friends down and surrounding it all is a traditional style soft play.

There’s also a dedicated soft play area, Mini Moo’s, for the under 5s so everyone is included in the fun. Named after the Mead Open Farm’s cuddly mascot, Shaggy’s indoor PlayWorld is huge – totalling over 13,000 sq feet!

Mead Open Farm Special Events

During the school holidays, Mead Open Farm usually have special events running with extra activities going on.  We visited for Shaggy’s Summer Spectacular.  The water zorbing was hilarious, watching my kids trying to knock each over.  They also had a popular silent disco and end of day foam party.  The Mead Open Farm Santa’s Grotto at Christmas time looks like a great experience.

Food & Drink at Mead Open Farm

Food options don’t usually warrant a mention in a review but I was so impressed with our lunch.  We had chicken nuggets from the kids menu which was wolfed down and a really good size.

I had a chicken burger and my eldest had regular burger and both were yummy and a special mention for delicious chips too.  The Grain Store kitchen felt like a casual restaurnt and the service was quick and friendly.  You order at the till and then don’t need to hang around as they then bring it to the table for you.

We had a great family day out at Mead Open Farm and would definitely recommend for a full day out.  If I was a little closer I’d be looking to buy an annual pass.
